This month’s edition will highlight December 2023 Google updates and related discussions that took place in X (Twitter).
If you are a digital marketer, advertiser, business owner, or individual with a keen interest in keeping up on significant Google updates, we are here to condense the information to help you stay on top of your game.
Most of the updates rolled out during November were an add-on rather than a noticeable update. So, we have compiled a brief of each update to give a quick rundown.
#1. Video Mode Modification
In April 2023, Google stopped updating the list with video content that is not the main focus of the page. Earlier, Google listed both pages where video content was a complementary asset and main content.
However, at the beginning of quarter three, they dropped this listing format of videos where it is not the main content of the page.
As an upgrade, in December 2023, users or searchers who play the video content in video mode will only be directed to the page where the video is the main focus.
Here’s how it looks in action:
As an impact of the upgrade, you’ll see the indexing status of the pages in which you’ve embedded videos.
You can access the information in the video indexing report, where you can find statuses like “No videos indexed” along with reasons such as “Video is not the main content of the page”
If your video is not the main content of the page, it might be because it is a complementary asset to your text content, product documentation page, or page with multiple videos. Moreover, you will also find other reasons why your video content has not been indexed in this indexing report.
This video mode update was rolled out on December 4th and has been successfully deployed.
#2. Vacation Rental Markup Support
Google has extended structured data markup support for vacation rental integration partners to improve listing lodging options for travelers.
These new updates enable small vacation rental partners to bag rich snippets and reach their target audience easily without a heavy setup process and maintenance.
Users can also access their structured data status under the vacation rental rich result report to find errors and fix them to bag their place in the listing.
In Closing
Google sent back-to-back core updates in October and early November. In December, only minor updates like video mode upgrade and vendor markup support were rolled out.
As the holiday season is wrapping up, we can expect some big moves in the upcoming months.
Saying attuned to these updates and aligning content strategies with user-centric approaches will be helpful for you if you are a marketer, content creator, and publisher.
